Nerve Pain Treatment At Chester Osteo & Physio
Nerve pain, also known as neuropathic pain, occurs when nerves are damaged, irritated, or compressed. Unlike muscle or joint pain, nerve pain often feels sharp, burning, tingling, or shooting, and may persist even when resting.
What Causes Nerve Pain?
Spinal Disc Herniation
A bulging or slipped disc can press on nearby nerves, causing pain, tingling, or weakness.
Diabetes (Diabetic Neuropathy):
High blood sugar levels over time can damage nerves, leading to burning or numbness, especially in the feet and hands.
Injuries or Surgeries Affecting Nerves
Trauma or surgical procedures can injure nerves, resulting in chronic pain or sensitivity.
Shingles or Infections
Viral infections like shingles can inflame nerves, causing sharp, burning pain along the affected area.
Neurological Conditions
Diseases that damage the protective covering of nerves can disrupt nerve signals and cause pain or abnormal sensations. Multiple Sclerosis being the disease many have heard of.
Questions,
Answered With Clarity
How important is an accurate diagnosis?
An accurate diagnosis is the first step toward effective recovery or pain management strategy. Understanding the exact cause of your nerve pain allows for a more accurate treatment. At Chester Osteo and Physio we take the time to listen to the history of your nerve pain before carrying out an expert examination. Following this we are in a great position to help you ourselves or refer on for further diagnostic tests.
Do I need treatment?
Depending on the nature and severity of your symptoms treatment can range from allowing the body to heal its-self to being referred for injections or surgery. The majority of nerve pain will resolve in time
How do we help with nerve pain?
Our person-centred approach in addition to a longer appointment time gives us the platform to understand your presentation clearly. This places us well to make sure your nerve pain is managed correctly. We wonāt just keep you coming back for manual treatment for the sake of it and often our approach will be to notify your GP and cover.
Do I need a scan?
Not everyone with nerve pain needs a scan. In many cases, a detailed assessment by an osteopath can identify the likely cause without imaging. However, if we suspect something more serious or need to confirm a diagnosis, we can refer you for an MRI or other investigations to ensure you get the right care.
Do I need surgery or injections?
Many cases of nerve pain will get better in time or be aided well by conservative measures such as an evidence informed osteopathic approach like ours. In the event an MRI or blood tests show significant findings, a specialist would be best placed to discuss surgery with you. In the case of nerve pain related to carpal tunnel syndrome we are able to write to your GP specifying you need an injection.
